Year 12 Enrichment
Posted on: 17/03/2022British Science Week 2022 is all about ‘growth’, and one way this was celebrated at the Compton was by inviting some special guests to the school to share with pupils their own experience of growth. Last Wednesday, a group of Y12 pupils attended a virtual talk on STEM careers delivered by scientists currently working at Charles River laboratories.
Pupils had the opportunity to get an insight into what it’s like to work in a lab. The talk began with a short introduction about drug discovery, followed by what they do at Charles River. Then, a chemist, a biologist, and an apprentice each talked about what they studied and how they ended up working at Charles River.
They then discussed the apprenticeship scheme they have to offer before finishing off the presentation with a Q&A session. Students had some thoughtful questions such as how they deal with ethical issues, what is the most recent drug they have discovered, do they accept BTEC Applied Science...
This enrichment has equipped students with the inspiration and information to make better-informed decisions about their future career paths. Studies have shown that careers education given to pupils in school can be linked to higher earnings in adult life.
