The Power of the Spoken Word
Posted on: 04/04/2022This term has seen the exciting climax of our Key Stage 3 Spoken Word Power poetry competition. The theme for the entries was ‘Speaking my Truth’, and our young poets were encouraged to write a poem which expressed some truth about themselves through poetry.
A selection of students from Key Stage 3 were helped in composing and performing their poems by professional actors and poets from Eastside Schools Foundation. All students from Key Stage 3 were encouraged to enter the competition via Show My Homework.
On 3rd March we held our final Poetry Slam workshop, in which a professional spoken word poet guided the students on how best to perform their poems to a live audience. A judging panel, made up of our own Ms Mulkerins, Ms Afghan and Ms Goodfellow, was hugely impressed by all the entries and eventually selected Rimay, Zakaria and Joseph as the first, second and third place winners.
All the entrants were then invited to attend the Eastside Schools Foundation Poetry Slam final at The Criterion Theatre in London’s West End, where our talented winners had the unique opportunity of performing their poems again in front of finalists from schools across the UK.
