Science Club: How can you get clean water from contaminated water?

Last week in science club students made a water filter to purify contaminated water. Students used a water bottle and started making their filters using household items such as coffee filters, cotton balls, rice and sand. Students made sure to add these filter materials in layers.

Students found out that water slips easily through the filter materials, but bigger contaminants get trapped. The filter materials usually get finer and finer, so they can catch whatever was missed earlier. Students also had the opportunity to repeat the filtration steps to ensure they achieved clean water.
