Black History Month Podcast

Posted on: 06/11/2023

In light of Black History Month (1.10.23 – 31.10.23) 2023, the English department recently provided students in Year 7 with an exciting opportunity to write a poem, based on Black history. Students across Year 7 took part in a lesson delivered by their English teachers, centered on key Black figures in Britain who paved the way. Students went on to listen to a reading of a poem by J Chambers, entitled ‘Letter to Self’, recorded on Blue Peter.

After discussing their impressions of the poem (which was inspired by Black history), Year 7 students planned and wrote their own poems, based on what they’d learnt. Several students in Year 7 were chosen by their English teachers to take part in The Compton School’s Podcast for Black History Month. Students recorded their  poems (or a poem written by a peer), before then being interviewed about the significance of their poems as part of the Black History Month podcast. It was lovely to see such exemplary work, especially from such young students!
