The Equalities Student Leadership Team 2023

Posted on: 17/07/2023

We are the Sixth Form Equalities Leadership Team: Alisha, Tasneem, Keshav, Joyce, Yusra, Talullah, Milo, Zilan and Gabriel.

We are part of a larger, student leadership team and we were appointed during the Spring Term; since then, we have been working hard to continue the conversation around equalities in our school community.

At the Compton School, a key priority of our team is to help students have a strong understanding of right and wrong; to help foster an inclusive culture and to help educate our school community through raising awareness and information sharing. We want everyone in our community, Governors, students, parents and staff, to feel welcome, safe and included.

What is the Equalities Team?

The Equalities Team is a student-led team which aims to advocate respect for others, no matter what their race, sex, sexual orientation, age religion or beliefs may be. Our intent is to collaboratively raise awareness in our school community about inclusivity and diversity and to recognise the different personalities, identities and characteristics found within our school community: we want to help create a culture where difference is celebrated.

What is our end goal?

One of our main goals is to educate through information sharing; we do this is a wide range of ways, for example through designing informative posters which are displayed in all corridors, putting up banners (most recently for Pride Month) and creating our own podcasts which are shared to each Tutor Group in our school; we recently created one about Pride Month, which aimed to challenge misconceptions and stereotypes, as well as introducing the Equalities team members and their role within the school. You can listen to it here:

What have we accomplished recently?

We are also organising whole school events. Recently, as a team, we have been focusing on planning and organising a Culture Day where students can express their culture through various clothes and food; we are planning on holding this in the Autumn Term so keep an eye on the newsletter for more information about how you can get involved!

In June, we created digital posters displayed around the school. These posters presented key inspiring LGBTQ+ role models from a range of careers and backgrounds. LGBTQ+ banners were displayed in Reception and the Concourse of our school to create an inviting, inclusive environment. We also put together a podcast themed around the history of Pride Month with the aim of educating our school on its social importance and historical significance.

Sixth Form support for the younger years:

Finally, as a team we really want to promote the fact that we are there for every student in our community and that there is the option of having a safe space to come and talk to us about anything they wish without feeling judged or pressured. We feel that it is important for the students to have an older student who can relate to them (as we have gone through the transition ourselves), therefore we have created a slide that will go round to all Form Tutors to show the students who we are and to present our faces so they know who they can go to, even if it's just finding us in the corridor wanting to have an informal conversation.

We are really proud of the work we have achieved this year and cannot wait to get started again in the Autumn Term!
