Mastery Science: Year 7 Curriculum

Posted on: 04/07/2023

Year 7 students were exposed to the new Mastery Science curriculum this year. In one of the practicals students investigated seed dispersal. This lesson is part of the Unit Reproduction and Key Concept Sexual and Asexual Reproduction.

Students learnt that seed dispersal is an important aspect of plant reproduction. If not suitably dispersed, seeds will germinate very close to their parent plant. This means that the seedlings must compete with one another and, of course, the parent plant for space, light, water and nutrients.

Part of the lesson included: How does wind affect seed dispersal? (Wind) Students set up the fan a fixed distance from the person dropping the seed. Students use the same speed on the fan for every seed they drop. Students dropped the seed one at a time from a fixed height and measured how far along the ground the seeds travel. Students enjoyed working together in groups and collecting results for this investigation.
