Science - Universal Indicator

Posted on: 24/05/2023

In science club, students made their very own indicator using a red cabbage. A pH indicator is a substance which has one colour when added to an acidic solution and a different colour when added to an alkaline solution. Plants can act as indicators as they have various colouring materials.

The experiment has two parts. In the first part, students safely set up a Bunsen burner and boiled red cabbage in water.  In the second part, they tested their indicator using different household items.  Between the two parts, the mixture was left to cool and during this period students had the opportunity to discuss the background of the experiment.
